How to become

an Urban Designer

Pathway to becoming an Urban Designer

At present, the only formal pathway to becoming a qualified Urban Designer in Sri Lanka is through the University of Moratuwa.

Previously, the Institute admitted Urban Designers based on professional experience through a structured application process. However, with effect from 2025, this experiential pathway is no longer available.

Admission to the Urban Design programme at the University of Moratuwa is conducted through a competitive application and selection process and does not fall under the general government university entrance criteria (A/L–based intake).

The application and selection process is outlined below.

Post Graduate Studies

Overview

The programme is structured as a one-year Postgraduate Diploma, which provides a direct pathway to a two-year Master’s Degree in Urban Design. Lectures are conducted primarily on weekends at the University of Moratuwa, enabling participation by working professionals.

The curriculum comprises both theoretical components covering a wide range of subject areas and intensive design exercises. Assessment is conducted under a unit-based marking system and includes assignments, written theory examinations, and design-based critiques and examinations.

This programme is particularly well suited for graduates currently engaged in related professional fields who have a strong interest in Urban Design.

The aim of the course is to impart the knowledge and skills required to achieve professional competence in the art and practice of Urban Design, while fostering awareness and appreciation of Urban Design principles among allied disciplines.
